Taylor describes her artistic and professional journey as an explorative nod to her home, the Bay Area, and all of its incredible contributions to the world.
Artist Statment
Whether it was stories of her grandmother's migration to Oakland from Mississippi or her dad's stories about being bussed up into the hills to desegregate white schools, oral history always made Taylor feel immensely connected to the past. Most of Taylor's interests and inspiration comes from observing her environments and being attentive to the people around her. She’s able to identify patterns and commonalities that connect seemingly separate entities such as groups of people, different places, and the past and the present.
Much of her independent work revolves around the themes of home, belonging, and selfhood. She's particularly interested in the concept and feeling of "at home;" how it is created, sustained, destroyed, recreated, and all of the liminal spaces in between. She believes recognizing and understanding this cycle of birth, death, and rebirth is pivotal to understanding and navigating life itself.
Taylor is a keen observer of her environment, a passionate keeper of history and culture, and an idealistic forecaster of the future. The mission behind her work is to actively preserve Black American history, tradition, and culture, and promote radical thought on the urban Black American experience.
